Senior Research Associate (Electrophysiology)
Ref: RA2053
£35,333 - £42,155 per annum
Full-Time, Fixed Term
We are seeking a Senior Research Associate with patch-clamp electrophysiology expertise as part of a British Heart Foundation funded project. The research seeks to understand the role of pre-junctional purinergic receptors of sympathetic vasomotor neurons, investigating them as novel pharmacological targets with which to regulate arterial tone. This includes understanding how purinergic receptors expressed by vasomotor sympathetic neurons regulate cellular electrophysiological properties, and the release of neurotransmitters. Whole-cell and perforated patch electrophysiological studies will be undertaken using primary cultures of neurons isolated from mouse sympathetic ganglia, compared with single cell RT-PCR analysis to match electrical and transcriptional phenotypes of vasomotor and other functional subtypes of sympathetic neurons. Expression of purinergic receptors will be confirmed using immunocytochemistry of cultured neurons, sympathetic ganglia and vascular preparations. Neurotransmitter release will be measured following viral expression of fluorescent biosensors in cultured sympathetic neurons and single cell imaging.
The successful candidate will join a lively and internationally recognised group in the field of purinergic signalling led by Professor Samuel Fountain. The group is well funded by British Heart Foundation, UKRI and industry partners, and located in the Biomedical Research Centre on the UEA campus.
This full-time post is available from 1 May 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a fixed term basis of up to 36 months.
Closing Date: Thursday 19 January 2023
The University is committed to diversifying its workforce. As examples, we already hold an Athena SWAN Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality. We also have a Vice-Chancellor led Taskforce on Tackling Racism and a Race Equality Charter Working Group which support our work on race equality. Our aim is to submit to the Race Equality Charter in 2024.
