Senior Research Associate – Enabling Water Smart Communities (household and community practices)
Ref: RA2029

£35,333 to £42,155 per annum, pro rata
Part-Time 0.8fte, Fixed Term

The School of Environmental Sciences is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate to join the ‘Enabling Water Smart Communities’ team (https://waterinnovation.challenges.org/winners/water-smart-communities/) being led at UEA by Dr Tom Hargreaves. Water Smart Communities are settlements that combine different elements of water management to deliver multiple benefits for society and the environment. They use a holistic and integrated approach to urban water management to contribute to green high-quality open spaces, promote sustainable use of water resources, build resilience to climate change and extreme weather events, contribute to biodiversity and deliver water efficient homes.

UEA’s role in this project is to understand how the design and development of Water Smart Communities is both shapes and is shaped by how water is used in the everyday lives of households and communities.

The post will involve predominantly qualitative research methods to explore the impacts of mains-limited and water smart developments on water users’ everyday lives and social practices, seeking to understand how changes to the built environment and the stewardship of water impact on the meanings and values associated with water, understandings of water scarcity, and water demand. This will include:
  • conducting literature reviews and a desk-based mapping study to synthesise existing social science evidence on the impacts of mains-limited developments on water use practices;
  • conducting case study research (including householder and stakeholder observations, interviews and workshops) to explore the impacts of mains-limited communities on water use practices;
  • assisting with the running of workshops and stakeholder meetings to support the EWSC project;
  • liaising with the wider EWSC team to translate research findings towards shaping approaches to integrated water management and developing water smart communities.

You will have an emerging international publication profile and be able to take a lead role in writing and communicating high quality research outputs from the project in collaboration with other members of the EWSC team.

The post would suit someone who has (or is soon to be awarded) a PhD (or equivalent experience) in environmental social science, science and technology studies (STS), human geography, sociology or a cognate social sciencediscipline. The successful candidate needs to be able to meet all of the essential criteria set out in the Person Specification.

This part-time 0.8fte post is available from 1 December 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a fixed term period of up to 30 months, must end 30 June 2025.

Closing Date:  Thursday 3 November 2022
