Senior Research Associate in Inverse Modelling of Air-Sea Greenhouse Gas Fluxes
Ref: RA2059
£35,333 to £42,155 per annum
Full-Time, Fixed Term
Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to investigate the exchange of greenhouse gases (GHGs) between polar ocean regions and the atmosphere. The SRA will work with Professor Parv Suntharalingam, Professor Jan Kaiser, Dr Dorothee Bakker and another SRA at the University of East Anglia (UEA), as part of the GreenFeedBack ("Greenhouse Gas Fluxes and Earth System Feedbacks") consortium, a Horizon Europe project. Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are the most important anthropogenic GHGs, but key questions remain unresolved about the best parameterisation of their exchange between atmosphere, ocean and sea-ice.
The SRA will develop robust regional estimates of GHG fluxes for the Arctic region using inverse model analyses (GEOSChem-LETKF) in combination with atmospheric GHG measurements from long-term surface networks and new measurements made by GreenFeedback partners. The SRA will closely collaborate with another SRA in the UEA project team to develop and assess new a priori GHG flux distributions for the polar oceans (developed from SOCAT (Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas) and MEMENTO (MarinE MethanE and NiTrous Oxide) databases) and to assess the additional value of new atmospheric measurements towards improving regional flux estimates.
Model analyses and flux estimates will be carried out using the GEOSChem–Localized Ensemble Kalman Filter (GEOSChem-LETKF) system recently used at UEA to estimate regional air-sea CO2 fluxes (Chen et al. 2021, https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-18-4549-2021; Mackay et al. 2022, https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-022-00592-6). The GEOSChem-LETKF system is implemented on UEA’s high-performance Linux computing cluster ADA (https://www.uea.ac.uk/groups-and-centres/research-and-specialist-computing/high-performance-computing).
The SRA will write up their research for publication in international, peer-reviewed science journals and present the work at national and international conferences, and to stakeholders and policymakers. They will work with partners across the GreenFeedBack consortium, contribute their own ideas and insights to the project and, where appropriate, help with the supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate students.
This full-time post is available immediately, for a fixed term period of up to 36 months.
Closing Date: Monday 16 January 2023
The University is committed to diversifying its workforce. As examples, we already hold an Athena SWAN Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality. We also have a Vice-Chancellor led Taskforce on Tackling Racism and a Race Equality Charter Working Group which support our work on race equality. Our aim is to submit to the Race Equality Charter in 2024.
