Senior Research Associate in Air-Sea Exchange of Greenhouse Gases
£35,333 to £42,155 per annum
Full-Time, Fixed Term
Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to investigate the exchange of greenhouse gases (GHGs) between polar oceans, sea-ice and the atmosphere. The SRA will work with Professor Jan Kaiser, Dr Dorothee Bakker, Professor Parv Suntharalingam and another SRA at the University of East Anglia (UEA), as part of the GreenFeedBack ("Greenhouse Gas Fluxes and Earth System Feedbacks") consortium, a Horizon Europe project. Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are the most important anthropogenic GHGs, but key questions remain unresolved about the best parameterisation of their exchange between atmosphere, ocean and sea-ice.
The SRA will develop new parameterisations of air-sea gas exchange that will consider the effects of sea ice on momentum, sensible and latent heat fluxes, in partially ice-covered areas. To assess the impact of surfactants, they will lead collaborative GreenFeedBack experiments in the Roland von Glasow Air-Sea-Ice Chamber (RvG-ASIC) at UEA (https://www.uea.ac.uk/environmental-sciences/sea-ice-chamber), including the use of gas chambers and surface tension measurements over seawater spiked with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) or analogues thereof. Other experiments will focus on the simulation of snow, rain, wind pumping and flooding events in the RvG-ASIC facility, with the aim to develop parameterisations that take into account the role of snow thickness and rain in modifying gas fluxes. In addition, the SRA will work on targeted analyses and mapping of GHG concentrations and fluxes from databases such as SOCAT (Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas) and MEMENTO (MarinE MethanE and NiTrous Oxide), in order to derive new bottom-up estimates of air-sea exchange fluxes in the polar oceans.
The SRA will write up their research for publication in international, peer-reviewed science journals and present the work at national and international conferences, and to stakeholders and policymakers. They will work with partners across the GreenFeedBack consortium, including modellers, contribute their own ideas and insights to the project and, where appropriate, help with the supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate students.
This full-time post is available immediately, for a fixed term period of up to 24 months.
Closing Date: Monday 16 January 2023
The University is committed to diversifying its workforce. As examples, we already hold an Athena SWAN Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality. We also have a Vice-Chancellor led Taskforce on Tackling Racism and a Race Equality Charter Working Group which support our work on race equality. Our aim is to submit to the Race Equality Charter in 2024.
