Description

Faculty of Science
School of Biological Sciences

Senior Research Associate
Ref: RA2044

£35,333 - £42,155 per annum
Full-Time, Fixed Term

Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate to join the laboratory of Professor Jonathan Todd and Dr Ben Miller at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in collaboration with Professor Alexandra Turchyn and Dr Frances Hopkins.

The Senior Research Associate will join a well-resourced lab in the School of Biological Sciences, UEA, working on a NERC-funded project to investigate microbial dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) cycling associated to terrestrial cropped plants. You will drive a multi-disciplinary project that involves field sampling and detailed DMSP cycling process measurement with a focus on climate active gas production rates. You will conduct in depth culture-dependent and -independent molecular environmental microbiology and biochemistry work to identify active microorganisms degrading DMSP and generating dimethylsulfide (DMS) and/or methanethiol (MeSH) in field samples and model microorganisms, and the pathways and genes that they use to do so. It is essential that the post-holder is therefore experienced in molecular and environmental microbiology and the functional characterisation of enzymes. It is important the post-holder has a willingness to be part a multi-disciplinary project and team studying DMSP biology and to develop and train fellow team members.

Candidates should hold a PhD or be near to completion (or have equivalent professional experience in the research area), and have a strong publication record, appropriate for their career stage.

This full-time post is available from 1 January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a fixed term basis of up to 36 months.

Closing Date: Tuesday 29 November 2022

The University is committed to diversifying its workforce. As examples, we already hold an Athena SWAN Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality. We also have a Vice-Chancellor led Taskforce on Tackling Racism and a Race Equality Charter Working Group which support our work on race equality. Our aim is to submit to the Race Equality Charter in 2024.
